Note: Asian shares found some comfort Friday as Beijing announced a new round of trade talks with Washington, though recession fear has markets betting the next move in US interest rates might be down.

And Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also signaled further policy easing and support for small business.

Gold: Keeping with the overall risk-off theme, gold hit a 6.5-month high at $1,298.42 oz Friday. Futures in the US have cracked the psych resistance at 1,300. oz

Energy: Crude Oil prices up Friday, shaking off prior losses after China said it would hold talks with US trade officials on 7-8 January to find solutions to the trade disputes between the world’s 2 biggest economies.

  • ICE Brent Crude Oil futures were at $56.12 bbl at 0542 GMT, + 17c, or 0.3%, from their last close.
  • NYMEX WTI Crude Oil futures were at $47.25 bbl, +16c, or 0.3%.

Both Crude Oil benchmarks were down earlier in the session on concerns that the US-China trade dispute would lead to a global economic slowdown.

Equities: Shanghai blue chips .CSI300 swung 2.1% higher, while SKorea .KS11 bounced 0.6%. Steadying after an overnight hammering, E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 ESc1 rose 0.5%.

The overall mood was still cautious, as Japan’s Nikkei .N225 fell 2.75% on its 1st trading day of the year, weighed by growth worries and the strength of JYP.

MSCI’s index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS edged up 0.4%, but is still down 1.8% at the end of another difficult week.

Currencies: USD firmer Vs a basket of peer currencies at 96.357, while EUR held steady at $1.139
